Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.

Challenges Of Manual Forex Trading

Submitted by: Winsor AGA Hoang

It takes twelve years of discipline to come a doctor, eight years of schooling to become a lawyer and five years of extensive training to become an engineer. However, most people think that they can become good traders by taking one or two trading courses or by taking several winning trades in the Forex market.

Forex currency trading is complex and is extremely demanding! Most retail traders fail 80-90% of the times in their venture. All traders try to make large sums of money using the high leverage provided by the brokers. Leverage is a double edge sword where you can make a lot of money quickly, or you can lose a lot of money even quicker. Many new traders lose their initial investment within the first two month trading and in most case struggle to win the lost money back, by investing more. Trading without proper techniques and money management is similar to gambling. Think about a new doctor, he may have the education training but still requires two years of residency. Most traders lack the education, patient, and neglect the rules of money management.

Most traders who enter the Forex market are being drawn to the promise and hope of easy money. They are drawn by small starting capital and yet the being able to trade large amount of money due to enormous leverage offered by the industry. Novice traders trade without any kind of effective trading plan, and they may be pushed by their instructors to open real trading account using their instructors as introducing brokers. Most of the traders have no proper idea about good trading software, how to use the charts, or perform a detailed technical analysis of the currency pair they are trading. Novice traders should not be opening real account after one or two years of demo trading and many practicing trades. During the demo trading period, it is recommended that notice traders should follow automated trading software in parallel. A good trading software is the one that completely focuses on risk management, and is simple to operate and easy to understand by even an inexperienced trader.

Whether it is a novice trader, or any experienced person trading in Forex market, they would make basic money management mistakes, and it is here that they fall miserably. Many-a-times the retail traders make emotional attachment to their trades resulting into large losses. And this happens more with the novice traders who lack the experience of controlling their greed, fear and disciplines. After experiencing regular bouts of loss, new traders ultimately lose the interest, and finally give up.

In the attractive sounding Forex Market, things are not easy as they seemed. Sudden changes create the windfall or downfall for the retail traders. A trader can make easy and huge gains in a short period of time, but it is his consistence performance over six to twelve months that will determines his success. This fundamental also applies to Forex trading software and managed Forex accounts using manual trading or automated trading. All trading systems must be followed for at least six months before committing further investment. If you assume that Forex trading experience can be accumulated in a few months with several trading courses or real time trading chat rooms, it will be a hard learned lesson. It is after six to twelve months that everything begins to go topsy-turvy.

The trick is to understand that the trading profession will requires at least four years of experience before you can generate profits consistently. During the meantime, use the automated trading software in parallel to earn you some income.

Mars rover engineers build test sandbox

Sunday, May 8, 2005

Mars rover engineers have built a test bed simulating the condition of the Mars Rover Opportunity, which became stuck in a Martian sand dune on April 26. The test bed uses a combination of materials including play sand for children’s sandboxes, diatomaceous earth for swimming pool filters, and mortar clay powder.

Opportunity dug into soft sand to wheel-hub depth as it drove over a dune about one-third meter (one foot) tall and 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide. “We’ve climbed over dozens of ripples, but this one is different in that it seems to be a little taller and to have a steeper slope, about 15 degrees on part of its face,” said Mark Maimone, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) rover mobility engineer. Tests will be conducted using an Earth-bound twin of the rover and the simulated Martian dune to determine how to best maneuver Opportunity out of the predicament before transmitting commands to the actual vehicle.

“We choose to proceed cautiously, so we don’t expect to begin actually driving out of the dune before next week, possibly later,” said Jim Erickson, rover project manager at JPL. “Both Opportunity and Spirit have already provided many more months of scientific exploration than anyone expected. By taking good care of them, we hope to keep them exploring for more months to come. Tests so far have sustained our optimism about Opportunity’s ability to drive out of this dune, but we have more testing ahead to understand how robust that capability is.”

Engineers constructed a simulated dune last week using sand that was already at JPL’s rover testing facility and put a test rover into a similar dug-in position. The test rover had no difficulty driving away, even when sunk belly-deep. However, that sand offered better traction than the finer, looser material that appears to make up the surface at Opportunity’s current position. “We needed to do tests using material more like what Opportunity is in, something that has a fluffier texture and cakes onto the wheels,” said JPL rover engineer Rick Welch, who is leading the tests.

Based on images of wheels and wheel tracks from Mars, Dr. Robert Sullivan of Cornell University, a rover science team member, working with engineers in the JPL test bed, helped match the properties of the test sand as closely as possible with those of the sand beneath Opportunity, “We found that when the wheels dig in, the material we’re using does stick to the wheels and fills the gaps between the cleats, but it doesn’t stick when you’re just driving over it. That’s good because it’s the same as what we see in the images from Opportunity,” Sullivan said. Experiments show that the test rover, after some initial wheel-spinning, can drive out of the more powdery material.

The team went to several home supply and hardware stores to find enough bags and boxes of the ingredients to make more than 2 tons of the simulated Mars sand for the more realistic mobility tests, according to JPL rover mobility engineer Jeff Biesiadeckia.

Whoopi Goldberg to take Rosie O’Donnell’s spot on ‘The View’

Thursday, August 2, 2007

Actress, Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner, Whoopi Goldberg will be taking Rosie O’Donnell’s place as co-host of The View.

It was confirmed by the shows host Barbara Walters on Wednesday’s show who said that Goldberg will begin to co-host on September 4, the shows season premiere. Shortly after the announcement, Goldberg made an appearance on the show.

“Who knows? Anybody could say ‘I don’t like her.’ That’s OK. I just won’t come to your home,” added Goldberg.

When O’Donnell co-hosted The View, she sparked a feud with Donald Trump after O’Donnell called Trump a “pimp” in her personal blog by saying that Trump “has no right to be the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America.”

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Sunday, May 20, 2012

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Girls Aloud win Popjustice £20 Music Prize

Tuesday, September 6, 2005

British pop group Girls Aloud have won the 2005 Popjustice £20 Music Prize with their single “Wake Me Up”. The award, organised by music journalist Peter Robinson, is given annually to the best British pop single of the previous 12 months and is a tongue-in-cheek response to the Mercury Music Prize, the winner of which was announced earlier in the evening.

This year’s shortlist included Basement Jaxx, Robbie Williams and Charlotte Church.

This is the second time Girls Aloud have won the award – they won the inaugural prize in 2003 for “No Good Advice”.

Also announced was the winner of the £20 Invoice Prize for the worst British single of the previous 12 months. The winner, charity single Band Aid 20’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, was the UK’s Christmas number one in 2004.
