United States military kills Qasem Soleimani

Sunday, January 5, 2020

Thursday, United States military forces killed Qasem Soleimani, head of Iran’s Quds Force, in an airstrike. The United States called its actions defensive in nature, pointing to the December 31 attack on the United States Embassy in Baghdad as an example of the attacks on U.S. citizens that Soleimani took part in.

The United States carried out the airstrike at Baghdad International Airport, where Soleimani was arriving by plane. He was being met by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was also killed in the airstrike. al-Muhandis was the deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an Iranian-backed militia. Other victims included a Kataeb Hezbollah official and Mohammed Reda, an airport protocol officer. The Daily Telegraph, citing local paramilitary groups, reported that the attack consisted of three rockets launched from helicopters.

In a statement released after the attack, the United States Department of Defense justified the strike, which was approved by President Donald Trump, as “defensive” in nature: “At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more. He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months – including the attack on December 27th – culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel. General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week. This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”

The military strike follows rocket attacks on the United States Embassy in Iraq; Business Insider reported that the rocket strikes were carried out by sympathizers of the PMF. In a statement following the attack, Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for the PMF, blamed both Israel and the United States for the attack. As of January 3, no evidence of Israeli involvement has been reported.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which includes the Quds Force, declared that Soleimani was “martyred” by the airstrike. Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, ordered three days of public mourning after the strike. In his message, he appreciated Soleimani’s lifepath: “He was a stellar example of those educated and nurtured in Islam and the school of Imam Khomeini (ra). He spent his entire life engaging in jihad in the path of God. Martyrdom was his reward for years of implacable efforts […] Shahid Soleymani is the international face of the resistance and all who have a heart-felt connection to the resistance seek his blood revenge.”

In his statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found the air strike justified and called Trump’s order swift, forceful and decisive.

The United States Embassy in Iraq had suspended operations, and advised U.S. citizens to leave the country immediately in its January 3 security alert. The office asked U.S. citizens not approach the Embassy, and if in need for travel documents, to use the consulate in Erbil.

Adil Abdul-Mahdi, the acting Prime Minister of Iraq, spoke out against the attack, calling it “an aggression on Iraq as a state, government and people” as well as a violation of the rules relating to the presence of United States troops in Iraq.

In 2007, the United States government labeled Soleimani as a terrorist and levied sanctions against him. He was further sanctioned in 2011 in relation to a plot to kill the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States. Last April, the United States Department of State also designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The United States had also levied individual sanctions against al-Muhandis.

Health Care Reform S Time Is Near!

Health Care Reform s Time is Near!

by

Healthcare Solutions Team

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr once famously observed, Time takes time. While I m sure that Ringo Starr wasn t talking specifically about health insurance as far as I know, his keen observation remains a timely one as we witness the gradual unfolding of health care reform. It makes you think doesn t it??

The Affordable Care Act is now just five months away from the historic first open enrollment period of the new federal-state health exchanges. It is supposed to provide a simplified, one-stop online source for affordable health insurance for individuals and small businesses. But the on-line 21 page application has our federal government scrambling to find a more stream-lined version that will be less demonstrative for the many people that cannot maneuver around a computer let alone a complicated website and application process with no help.

The individual mandate portion of the law, of course, requires all Americans to obtain health insurance or face a penalty on their federal income tax. But many are in the dark and will have to pay more for their coverage through the exchange verses if they would contact us at Healthcare Solutions team for the help that they so badly need.

Unfortunately, a health tracking poll done in April by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 4 in 10 of us (42 percent) still don t know that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Why? Well, 12 percent think Congress repealed it, 7 percent think the Supreme Court overturned it, and the other 23 percent are just plain confused about it. And because our species tends to be change-averse, more of us (40 percent) have an unfavorable rather than a favorable view (35 percent) of the law just now. With that in mind our insurance agents are ready and able to help all of you face your fear with the change that is looming in the very near future!

Health care reform is a huge change that s been surrounded by a lot of noise and will take, yes, some time for people to become comfortable with it. President Barack Obama acknowledged as much in a press conference last week, calling health care reform a big undertaking with many glitches and bumps ahead.

What do we think about this quandary? Most Americans haven t digested health care reform because it s not likely to affect them initially. That s because they now have health insurance through their individual plan that offers all the same benefits as the new exchange plans, is theirs to control and they will still save money!

Oh sure, you all will try to understand the process and the concept of the new exchange plans or not!

But as Ringo observed, that s gonna take some time.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.

World stocks plunge on fears on US recession

Monday, January 21, 2008

Stock prices dropped sharply in Europe and Asia Monday, with fears of economic problems in the United States causing some of the biggest single-day losses in recent years.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index fell 5.5 percent – its biggest fall since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Losses of between three and seven percent were recorded in India, China, Britain, France, Germany and Canada.

While there are many factors linking national economies, analysts blame recent losses on fears of a recession in the United States.

The United States is the main export market for many overseas businesses. Foreign investors also have bought large stakes in U.S. companies.

When American home loan companies began reporting large numbers of defaulting loans in late 2007, the losses spread to other financial institutions, tightening credit markets and sparking worries about Americans’ high levels of debt.

Last week, President Bush proposed a $145 billion stimulus plan to encourage more consumer spending. But analysts say the measure may not be able to prevent a recession – defined as a broad decline in a nation’s economy over a period of at least six months.

U.S. markets are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday, but stock futures trading indicates further losses are expected when markets reopen Tuesday.

Choosing The Best Retirement Community

Choosing The Best Retirement Community

by

Cara Larose

It s never easy moving out of a place we ve come to call home. There are some situations, however, that require this, especially if one is getting old. Moving out from home and transferring to a retirement community may be a bit sad at first, but once a person gets the hang of all the fun and excitement offered by it, it can help him or her grow physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In order to achieve satisfaction in this, one should choose the best retirement community to fit one s wants and needs. There are some factors to keep in mind when seeking an excellent neighborhood, and these include the following:

What Are The Neighbors Like?

This tends to affect a person s decision greatly. More so than other aspects being considered when looking for a good place to stay, this will probably have great impact in the decision-making process. It s not possible, after all, to have fun and feel good about a place if the neighbors aren t friendly. One ends up feeling alone when this is the case. In order to best gauge of the behavior of people in the area, one should take the time to conduct an investigation.

How Are The Facilities and Everything That Goes With Them?

This is one of the things that make retirement communities PA interesting and exciting. Immerse yourself and get to know what they offer, and see for yourself if it s the kind of thing that will keep you from getting lonely. Some of these have golf courses for those who want to stay active in sports, and most will have swimming pools and spa houses for relaxation. Events and activities are also heavily tied in to these facilities.

Does The Place Have An Approachable Staff?

Retirement communities PA are established to aid the elderly, which means that the first trait the staff should possess is patience. Understanding and devotion are necessary qualities in helping keep residents feel at home as well. They should always be willing to help the aged, even with the easiest task.

Is The Room Nice?

Retirement communities PA offer rooms or apartments. Check if all the things included in them are functional, such as the appliances, kitchen, and bathroom. Check if they are safe and secure too. Choose a location where people can easily get to you in case of an emergency.

Flash floods kill over a hundred in India, 500 missing

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Five hundred people are missing and as many as 150 are reported to have been killed by flash floods in India, caused by a sudden cloudburst that hit Indian-controlled Kashmir on Friday. The downpour struck the town of Leh and several surrounding villages, and reportedly caused a mud slide that hit the refugee-populated village of Choglamsar.

Associated Press reported that at least five foreign tourists were among those killed. Their nationalities are not known but New Delhi Television (NDTV) reported that 110 tourists, half of them foreigners, were being looked after at an Army transit camp on the Leh-Manali road. NDTV also said that the tourists had been given food, medicine and phone connections to their embassies. Flights have been arranged by the Indian government to bring affected foreign tourists back home.

Massive relief efforts are continuing; Farooq Ahmad, who is Inspector General of Police in Kashmir reported on Sunday today that “63 bodies had been identified so far and that rescue teams were fanning out to six villages near Leh that had not yet been reached during relief operations.” Believed to contain 5000 people, Choglamsar, on Leh’s outskirts, is one of the villages that rescuers have been clearing roads to reach.

The army has been called in to assist in rescue work. Thousands of troops, police and paramilitary soldiers were clearing roads in order to reach isolated villages. Those living in the upper reaches, whose housing was not adequate to provide protection, will have borne the full impact of the mud slides caused by the 12 mm of rain that fell on Friday in just a few minutes.

Officials said that rescuers were digging through crushed homes and piles of mud to search for survivors. The hundreds of reported injured are being treated at an army hospital and several makeshift clinics. Mohammed Deen Khan, a social activist who has been assisting in rescue work, said the mud was 15 feet high in some places. Heavy earth-moving equipment has been brought in to move the tonnes of mud and boulders blocking roads.

The rescue officials have faced a serious problem due to the severe damage of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) office, a telecommunication enterprise, leading to the complete disruption of communication in the Leh region. The general manager of BSNL reports that the damage has caused a loss of 120 million INR. Another telecommunication enterprise, Airtel, has provided SIM cards to local administration for setting up hotlines that people can call for assistance.

The major problem is due to the communication breakdown. If communication is restored it will help in co-ordination of rescue operations in a better way.

Pashi Tsetan, a local administration development wing (deputy director) said, “The major problem is due to the communication breakdown. If communication is restored it will help in co-ordination of rescue operations in a better way.” Other institutions like Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), the ITBP camp, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and others have also been affected.

1,314 people, mostly tourists, have been airlifted from Leh to Delhi. Three additional Indian Airlines flights from Jammu and Delhi have been planned. Three IL-76 and four AN-32 aircraft carried relief material to Leh this morning, and four more by Jet Airways and Air India and three by Kingfisher Airlines will carry relief material and doctors to Leh.

The ITBP has sent water tankers containing drinking water to affected areas. Medical camps have been set up in villages like Saboo. The bodies of eleven persons were transported to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan this morning.

India’s crisis comes as Pakistan is experiencing the worst floods in the country’s history.

FIA lays out cost cutting measures for Formula One

Friday, December 12, 2008

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has revealed the details of the cost-cutting measures for Formula One that were agreed on Wednesday in talks with the teams. The new measures are expected to save the manufacturer teams at least 30 percent of their budgets next season, with the savings increasing as more of the measures are introduced in the future. The raft of agreements has saved the teams from the threat of standardised engines until at least 2013 and savings for independent teams are predicted by the FIA to be even higher.

For next season the engines will now have to last 3 races, rather than thee current 2 race requirement, and each driver is allowed up to 8 engines throughout the year and the team is allowed a further 4 for testing. Engines will now be rev limited to 18,000 rpm and Renault managed to obtain agreement from the other teams for modifications of its engine to bring it into line with the other engines in the sport. Testing will be affected, with in season testing banned and wind tunnels not to exceed 6:10 scale or 50 metres per second. Teams will be expected to share fuel and tyre data at grand prix in an effort to save on the manpower requirement at the race weekends. The teams will also have to close their factories for 6 weeks a year. The FIA will also be conducting research into the possibility of using a medal system for F1 next season, an idea championed by Bernie Ecclestone, the boss of Formula One Management.

Starting in 2010 more changes will come into force, with the introduction of the cheaper engines being made available to independent teams, costing less than €5 million per season. Any contracts for the cheaper 2010 engines will have to be signed by the 20th of December, 2008. Another engine freeze will occur at the start of the 2010 season, with the engines from 2010 continuing through to the end of 2012. The FIA also intends to try to introduce standardised transmission systems in 2010 and will look at chassis design to determine which aerodynamic parts will be standardised or allowed to be competitive differentiators. Races will see more changes in 2010 with the use of tyre warmers and refuelling banned, and the possibility of shorter race distances has been put forward pending market research. What work the teams can engage in at the factories will also be further limited this season to reduce the manpower and other running costs.

The FIA has raised the possibility of a new power train entirely to be developed for the 2013 season, in consultation with the Formula One Teams Association, and will also discuss making Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) compulsory from 2010. KERS, which is being introduced as a voluntary measure in 2009, has divided the teams with some embracing the technology while others, such as Ferrari, have criticised it.

A Summary Of Rubber Mats For Horses And Their Uses

By Martha Vasquez

Rubber mats for horses, or floor coverings, are used to help keep a horse comfortable and also for their ease of surface cleaning. The covering provides cushion, which lessens stress on joints and do not cause sore spots like hard surfaces such as concrete. They also help insulate against cold and dampness.

Some of these coverings are manufactured with ribbing on one side and a smooth surface on the other. If the grooved side is placed up it provides good traction and drainage, however, it can slip on the flooring and get displaced. If the mat is placed so the smooth side is up, it provides little traction for the horse.

The benefits of using this type of product are many. They are cleaner than alternative bedding, such as straw or wood shavings, and save money on bedding since a good quality mat rarely needs replaced. Some, among many, of their uses include horse stalls, trailers, and wash areas.

These floor coverings do require a periodic thorough cleaning and must be removed from the stall or other area to clean underneath them. The underside and the floor it lays on must be washed with water and detergent and must be disinfected to remove urine and other contaminants. Both the covering and the floor underneath should be allowed to dry before replacing the mats.

The majority of this type of product available are made of rubber, however, there are a few manufacturers who make the floor coverings out of different types of materials. Some manufacturers use recycled truck tires to make them. A benefit of this practice is that it assists in keeping old tires from being stored in piles and becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes and rodents or from ending up in landfills.

Flooring of this kind can be purchased in many different sizes and styles depending on what they will be used for. Most can also be cut to size, if desired, but the specifications of the manufacturer should be checked before doing so to ensure that the guarantee on the product will not be voided. Some are made with protrusions that interlock with other pieces of the flooring and, therefore, can be sized to fit with only the very edges needing to be trimmed.

Thickness varies from three quarter inch up to one half inch. The thinner ones tend to curl at the corners and are more likely to absorb urine odors, which makes them unusable over time. The thicker the mat, the better its quality tends to be. The thicker coverings, however, are more difficult to move around due to their weight. As an alternative, smaller sections of a heavier mat can be placed together to cover a desired area making them easier to clean or to relocate as the need arises.

Rubber mats for horses are very beneficial when used as the manufacturer intend. Horses will be much more comfortable and their stall or other areas they occupy much cleaner. As with any product, the benefits of using the product must be weighted against the disadvantages. In the case of rubber floor coverings, there are many options available to suit individual needs. It must be kept in mind, however, that mats are not always an ideal alternative to conventional horse bedding.

About the Author: Looking for a cost-effective stall flooring for your horses? These environmentally-friendly rubber mats may be just what you need. These horse stall mats provide comfortable support for your horses, and help to relieve join pressure and can absorb shocks.
